Frequently asked questions

  • Any individual over the age of 21 can adopt a child in the UK, irrespective of their marital status, sexual orientation, or gender. There are no set upper age limits, but prospective adopters should be able to show that they have the energy, health, and longevity to provide a stable home for a child.

  • The adoption process can vary in length but typically takes between 6 months to a year from the initial application to when a child is placed with the adoptive family. After placement, a further period of at least 10 weeks is required before an adoption order can be applied for.

  • An adoption lawyer can guide you through the legal intricacies of the adoption process, provide advice on the preparation and submission of necessary documents, represent you during adoption hearings, and provide post-adoption legal support. Their role is to safeguard the interests of you and your child throughout the journey.

  • Once an adoption order is granted by the court, it is final and cannot be reversed except in very exceptional circumstances. A birth parent can only contest an adoption order before it is granted, and only if they can prove that proper consent was not given or that the adoption is not in the best interest of the child.

  • Same-sex couples have the same rights as heterosexual couples to adopt in the UK. They can apply individually or jointly to become adoptive parents.

  • Post-adoption contact refers to arrangements that allow an adopted child to maintain contact with their birth family after adoption. This can take various forms, including letters, emails, or face-to-face meetings, depending on what is in the best interest of the child.

  • Post-adoption support can include advice and information, counselling, support groups, financial assistance, and access to specialist services like therapeutic services. Your local authority or adoption agency should be able to provide information on available support.
